Tour Overview

Welcome to a multi day trek through this unique mountain systems at Munnar & Periyar, a hub of endemism, enabling this mountain eco-system to be included as one of the 36 bio-diversity hot spots of the world. Located along the highest areas of this ancient mountain range is the tea town of Munnar. This area with altitudes varying from 1400 m to 2680 m is where the trek will pass through. The eco-system is primarily the high altitude cloud forests, known as Sholas locally, and typical to the Western Ghats, interspersed with rolling grasslands. This is a hub of endemism with myriad endemic flora and fauna. The wildlife along this route includes the endangered and endemic Nilgiri Tahrs, Asiatic elephants, Indian Bison, leopards, tigers and sloth bears besides sambar deer and wild dogs.

Rainforest Trek at Munnar

Day1: Sivanmalay Trek
Transfer to Munnar from Kochi. Munnar is the heart of the tea-growing region of Kerala, set high on the seaward slopes of the Western Ghats. You will pass through the rubber, coconut and cardamom plantations and, as you enter the freshness of thin air, the countryside is covered by the green furring of tea with patches of the original rain forest clinging to the high and precipitous slopes. The scale of the country, the enormous panoramas, the lush colours, the craggy vertical heights all contribute to making this area one of the most beautiful regions of the Southern Highlands. On arrival, check into a resort set against the towering mountains of the Wester Ghats. From here you can go on an exploratory walk through the tea estates for acclimatizing to the new environment and altitude.
Day2: Mathikettan Shola N.P. Trek
Today you will be trekking through the Mathikettan Shola National Park. This is a high altitude rain forest saved from ‘development’ and preserved through a campaign by environmental activists here in Kerala. Your destination is Santhanpara, set amidst luxuriant vegetation and cardamom growing hamlets. En-route you will be passing large cardamom forests where cardamom, pepper & coffee are grown within the canopy of the forests. Elephants are common here. You will reach Santhanpara and stay at a resort.
Day3: ChaturangaparaTrek
Today's trek takes you through sholas and cardamom forests that abound here. The trek through from Shantanpara through thick forests and grasslands through the spine of the mountain range, you get fascinating views of the great plains of Tamilnadu. This area constitutes the world-famed ‘Cardamom Hills’ – the capital of the spice growing areas that have made Kerala famous through millennia. The highlight today is the climb atop the Chaturangapara peak with spectacular views of the plains of Tamilnadu thousands of feet below. After coming down the peak, transfer to a resort located near the famed Periyar Tiger Reserve.
Day4: Periyar Tiger Reserve Trek
Today's full day trek starts early, moving deep into the heart of the rain forests, looking for sights of wildlife activity – the pug marks of the big cats, the claw marks on the trees and the sights and sounds of the deepest forests. This is a full day trek in the company of local tribal trackers and local community guides. . Chances of sightings of wildlife is certain – herds of elephants, Nilgiri Langurs, the majestic Hornbills, 'gaurs' (Indian Bison) and sambhar deer.
Day5: Depart
This day marks the end of the Western Ghats  Rainforest Trek. You will depart after breakfast, taking with you the memories of the challenge and the sheer natural beauty of your rainforest trek.

I simply loved Kerala. It was amazing to be hiking in a country of 3.2 billion people and to have the open spaces and forests to ourselves. To see elephants in the wild was an absolute highlight, but it was much more than that. The people, their culture and their history was facinating. Satheesh and Georgie were fabulous. They saw to our every need and were happy to answer all our questions. It was refreshing to see 2 people loving what they do, it showed in so many ways. They are both passionate about what they do and we felt very safe and well cared for.Brenda Petersen 2024-02-13

Kerala! No wonder it's called God's own country. Absolutely stunningI And the gorgeous views of the Western Ghats, with  the endless greenery surrounding us instantly rejuvenates one's spirit. When my husband booked us a trip, which is basically our honeymoon, I didn't know where it was until I was at the check-in desk. A big thanks to Anna for arranging a completely luxurious and comfortable trip. Coming to our tour guides, Rahul and Sathosh were by far the best ones, and I can say this because of the care we've experienced. They are energetic, kind, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. This trip couldn't have happened without them and we all have quickly become friends. Trekking through every up & down of Munnar is a great task but with my injured knee joint, it was extra hard. However, both Santhosh and Rahul were there to help me out at every step of the way. They put our safety and comfort first. Despite the leeches, heavy rain and everything else, they did not lose their enthusiasm and energy which helped us finish the trek. Bravo and a huge thanks to them both. We are so looking forward to book a camping and wildlife observation trip with Anna, and we definitely want Rahul and Santhosh to be our guides again. Thank you again for helping make memories that lasts for our lifetime. I couldn't ask for a better experience than this.  Charlotte & Robert Power 2024-07-16
