E-Bike Tour in Rural Kerala

Day 1: At Fort Kochi
Arrive in the historic port city of Kochi, meet your local cycling guide and transfer to your boutique hotel located in the heritage zone of Fort Kochi, the cultural heart of this sustainable Kerala e-bike holiday. Later in the afternoon, it’s time for a relaxed e-bike familiarisation session, followed by a trial ride through the old city and is an ideal introduction to active travel in Kerala. Your introduction to vibrant and incredible Kerala begins with a guided tour of Fort Kochi and explores the area’s rich maritime history and multicultural heritage. Go past the iconic Chinese fishing nets along the waterfront, the historic churches and Portuguese-era buildings, colourful spice warehouses, fishing harbours and vibrant art cafés hidden within narrow lanes shaded by ‘rain trees’. The St Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India and originally constructed by the Portuguese, holds the tombstone of Vasco da Gama, who was interred here before his remains were moved to Portugal. Move on to the Dutch Cemetery, dating back to 1724, which has some of the oldest graves of Dutch and British settlers. The epitaphs tell tales of the colonial era, making it a fascinating visit for those interested in the region’s history. Next it is time to move on to the Mattancherry area with its old Jew street, the Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace) showcasing Kerala murals depicting Hindu temple art, along with portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi and finally the Pardesi Synagogue - built in 1568. The synagogue’s interiors are adorned with chandeliers, Belgian glass, and hand-painted tiles. In the evening, take a walk down the harbour front & watch the Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheenavala) the iconic symbol of Fort Kochi.
Day 2: Ride along the Malabar Coast to Muziris
After breakfast, transfer to the Northern outskirts of Kochi to begin a scenic ride of this guided Kerala e-bike holiday. The ride follows the historic Malabar Coast through palm-lined backwaters, traditional fishing villages and quiet coastal roads, offering an immersive slow travel experience far from the usual tourist routes. We explore the legendary Muziris heritage region, once an important centre of the ancient spice trade connecting India with Arabia, Rome and China. Cycling at a relaxed pace, discover centuries-old churches, synagogues and mosques, waterfront settlements and vibrant local communities that reflect the multicultural history of Kerala’s coast. This route is 35 km covering the Muziris areas, the cluster of the islands that make up the Periyar river delta regions and their lifestyles would be highlights of the day. The ride passes close to the coastline through the beaches of Cherai and through numerous fishing villages and finally to the Muziris area showcasing the ancient Chendamangalam Synagogue, now restored, the Paliath Palace where the erstwhile Maharaj’s important ministers often stayed and the first mosque in India – showcasing the various nationalities & religions who over the millennia patronised this great harbour for spices and precious stones. Ideal for couples, leisure cyclists and active travellers seeking a comfortable cycling holiday in India, today’s ride combines culture, coastal scenery and authentic local experiences.
Day 3: To the Western Ghats
We leave the coast behind and head towards the forested foothills of the Western Ghats, one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots and a UNESCO World Heritage landscape - the Western Ghats – the sentinel mountain system running the length of the State. Small villages and settlements dot the landscape as you leave the coconut plantations and paddy fields behind, before the slight ascent towards the mountain ranges starts. Cycling along quiet countryside roads Chalakudy River, experience a striking transition from village life to tropical rainforest landscapes rich in birdlife, plantations and endemic flora. This cycling holiday in Kerala also offers insight into community-led participatory forest management initiatives that help protect the fragile ecosystems and wildlife corridors of the Western Ghats while supporting local livelihoods and responsible tourism. Arrive at the spectacular Athirappilly Waterfalls, Kerala’s largest waterfall, where cascading waters plunge through dense rainforest fed by the Chalakudy River. The falls are especially dramatic during the monsoon season, when the river swells and the surrounding rainforest comes alive in vibrant shades of green. After checking into your nature retreat, enjoy time to explore the waterfalls and surrounding rainforest trails in one of Kerala’s most scenic natural landscapes. The Athirapilly area forms a part of the 36 bio-diversity regions of the world. Here you can go on a walk through the forests and you may be lucky to spot endangered species like the Malabar Pied Hornbills or the majestic Lion Tailed Macaques that have made these forests their natural home. The area is also home to large herds of elephants, which often visit the banks of the river.
Day 4: A quiet E-Bike ride along the River Periyar
Our e-bike tour continues through the lush Periyar River valley towards the Periyar River—the longest river in Kerala and a key lifeline of its biodiversity and rural communities. This is an immersive cycling holiday that follows quiet backroads through tropical rainforest edges, spice plantations, rubber estates, oil palm groves and traditional villages, offering a true slow travel experience and an authentic Kerala countryside cycling tour. The terrain includes flat sections, rolling hills and gentle climbs, making it a relaxed and enjoyable e-bike tour in Kerala. With luck, you may also spot wild elephants in this forested Western Ghats corridor. The ride ends at the dramatic Panieli Poru Rapids, where the Periyar River crashes through rocky forest terrain to form powerful rapids before continuing towards Kochi. After check-in at your riverside eco-resort, relax in a peaceful setting surrounded by forest and river views, with optional walks along the rapids—an ideal highlight of a nature-focused cycling holiday in Kerala.
Day 5: Ride to the lowlands forests at Thattekkad
Once again you are back in the saddle for a ride to Thattekkad, home to one of India’s richest bird habitats and an ideal destination for sustainable active travel in India. Forests, spice, rubber and fire wood plantations abound on one side of the river and forests on the other side which makes this foray an authentic glimpse into rural Kerala life. Learn about local communities and their history as ‘bamboo runners’ when they would float large bamboo bundles to be sold downstream. Stop to cool your feet in the water while you refresh yourselves and enjoy the scenery – and with possibilities of elephant sightings on the opposite banks of the river. Thattekkad is in a region of lowland forests with 12 species of amphibians, 275 species of birds and 76 species of butterflies, many endemics among them. The lush rain forest also harbours endemic birds like the brilliantly colorful Malabar Parakeets & the Malabar Trogons. Later, enjoy a gentle guided plantation walk to discover Kerala’s birdlife, tropical flora and the tranquil atmosphere of the Thattekkad region, often described as a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
Day 6: From Rainforests to the Water World
Today is the last riding day as we continue our e-bike tour from the forested Periyar River region towards the world of the Kerala ‘backwaters’, one of the most unique ecological systems in the world. The ride takes you through a striking transition in landscape—from the dense tropical rainforest edges and river valleys of the Western Ghats to a serene network of canals, lagoons, and slow-moving waterways near the coast. As you cycle along quiet rural roads and village paths, the scenery gradually opens into coconut groves, paddy fields, and waterways that define Kerala’s famous backwater ecosystem. This immersive cycling holiday in India offers a true slow travel experience, showcasing how land and water are deeply interconnected in local life, from fishing, duck rearing and farming to traditional transport by wooden canoes. The Kerala backwaters cycling route reveals a softer, more reflective landscape, where palm-lined canals mirror the sky and village life unfolds along the water’s edge. Arrive in your backwater region stay and unwind in a peaceful setting surrounded by water, birds, and lush greenery. This gentle transition from river valleys to backwaters makes it one of the most memorable highlights of a responsible cycling holiday in Kerala, combining nature, culture, and ecological beauty in a single day.

" Just wanted to let you know that we had an amazing time in Kerala doing the bike tour. Everything was perfect. The sights we saw and the people we met! The choice of accomodation was really interesting and had great variety. We loved staying in the homestays and being invited to eat with George and his family and Jose and Anita - what a privilege!! Best of all were Roger and Jose the driver. They looked after us so well. Roger was amazing..."Gary Reynolds 2024-02-18

The most memorable or exciting part of your holiday was being in the beautiful, lush and varied Kerala countryside with an experienced and super friendly local guide Alphin, who was able to give us so much local knowledge. Alphin was very personable, knowledgeable and attentive and made the holiday so enjoyable and easy. Also e-bikes were a fantastic way to cover a lot of ground and be close to nature, and were perfect in the heat.  Anna Tingle 2026-02-09

I couldn't recommend Kalypso Adventures enough. We booked their 8 day e-bike Kerala tour and it didn't disappoint in any way. The bikes were in excellent condition and the set-up was very slick. Roger, our guide, was brilliant and had so much knowledge to share of Kerala, its people, customs and wildlife. We were also supported by Rajiv, our support vehicle driver who was always there when you needed him. There were plenty of refreshment stops along the way and you always got to your hotel around lunchtime, leaving the afternoon at your leisure. It just worked perfectly. The booking communications was also excellent and all the transfers worked seamlessly. The hotels were quite varied but were all comfortable and clean. Cycling around the backroads, through forests and along the canals was the best way to experience this stunningly beautiful state - you see so much more and get away from the touristy parts. Peter Daws 2026-03-26
