Kerala Family Cycling Holiday in India

Day 1: Western Ghats at Athirapilly
Arrive at Cochin International Airport, where you will be welcomed and transferred to the spectacular Athirappilly, home to Kerala's largest and most famous waterfall. Surrounded by dense tropical forests and the flowing Chalakudy River, Athirappilly offers a refreshing introduction to Kerala's natural beauty. After checking into your resort, spend the afternoon exploring the magnificent waterfalls, enjoying riverside walks, or simply relaxing amidst the lush surroundings. Depending on your arrival time, you may also enjoy a short introductory cycle through the nearby villages before settling in for a peaceful evening.
Day 2: Panieli Poru
After breakfast, begin your cycling adventure through scenic countryside as you ride towards Paniyeli, following quiet village roads lined with rubber plantations, coconut groves, rivers, and paddy fields. The route offers plenty of opportunities to observe everyday village life, interact with local people, and experience Kerala's peaceful rural atmosphere. As you ride along forest trails, look out for elephants that occasionally cross the river to graze inside forests here. Arrive at the beautiful Paniyeli Poru, a picturesque riverside destination known for its rapids on the Periyar river cascading down the hills, crystal-clear waters, rocky streams, and lush greenery. Spend the evening relaxing by the river or enjoying the tranquil natural surroundings. Time permitting, you can also visit the elephant rescue centre, set up to care for abandoned calves or injured elephants.
Day 3-4: Lowland Forests
Continue cycling through beautiful plantations and forest landscapes to Thattekad, one of India's finest birdwatching destinations. Nestled along the banks of the Periyar River, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is home to hundreds of resident and migratory bird species, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Over the next two days, enjoy leisurely cycling through spice-growing villages, guided nature walks and optional birdwatching excursions with experienced naturalists. The calm environment and rich biodiversity provide wonderful opportunities for families to reconnect with nature while enjoying Kerala's unique wilderness.
Day 5: The Backwaters
Today's ride takes you towards the enchanting backwaters of Kumarakom, where an intricate network of canals, lakes, and lagoons creates one of Kerala's most iconic landscapes. Cycle through picturesque villages and narrow roads bordered by shimmering waterways before arriving at your lakeside accommodation overlooking the vast Vembanad Lake. Spend the evening enjoying a sunset cruise on Vembanad Lake, where you can watch the golden hues reflect over the tranquil waters as traditional houseboats glide by. Continue the evening soaking in the peaceful atmosphere that makes Kumarakom one of Kerala's most sought-after destinations.
Day 6-7: The Beach at Marari
Leaving Kumarakom behind, cycle into the heart of Kerala's famous backwaters towards Alleppey, where you will experience the warmth of traditional Kerala hospitality with an authentic homestay. Ride through peaceful canals, coconut-lined pathways, charming villages, and lush paddy fields while witnessing the everyday life of local communities. Your final cycling stage leads to the beautiful coastal village of Marari, renowned for its golden beaches, swaying coconut palms, and laid-back atmosphere. Cycle through fishing villages and scenic coastal roads before arriving at your beach resort. Over the next two days, relax on the tranquil shoreline, enjoy optional tuk-tuk tour through nearby villages, witness traditional fishing activities, indulge in Ayurvedic wellness treatments, or simply unwind beside the Arabian Sea. Marari provides the perfect conclusion to your cycling holiday, allowing ample time to relax and reflect on the incredible journey through Kerala's diverse landscapes.
