Rural Cycling in Kerala

Day1: Arrival at Kochi
On arrival, you will check into a hotel at Fort Kochi. After briefing about the entire tour and fitting up the cycles, evening will be used to discover this amazing city of Kochi. Kochi (Cochin as it was known in colonial times) is a major port on the west coast of India, set on a cluster of islands surrounded by sparkling blue lagoons and backwaters. Its historic links can be seen in the Colonial bungalows, an old Synagogue, Chinese fishing nets, the oldest European church in India and a medieval Portuguese palace.
Day2: The lowland forests of Thattekkad
After breakfast you will start off on your cycles making the most of the pleasant temperature early in the morning, heading towards the foothills of the Western Ghats towards the lowland forests of Thattekkad. You will pass through a scenic countryside of temples, spice gardens, paddy fields and rubber plantations. You will reach the spectacular eco-lodge on the banks of the River Periyar. You can also take a walk around the plantation areas that surround the camp or go kayaking through the river in the company of your guide.
Day3: The trading town of Thodupuzha
After short ride, you will visit the famous Thommankuthu Waterfall located near Thodupuzha. View of the 7 cascaded waterfall is a feast to your eye and will require a small trek into the wilderness. Afterwards, you will be discovering more of the rural Kerala as you cycle through the sylvan Keralan countryside towards the trading town of Thodupuzha located at the foothills of the Western Ghats. Here the countryside is a mix of rubber plantations and spice growing villages.
Day4: Gateway to the backwaters - Kumarakom
Today you will cycle along the country roads in the Kumarakom village, the gateway to the backwaters. You will be seeing numerous temples, paddy fields, watery canals along the village route. After reaching Kumarakom, you will settle into a beautiful resort on the banks of the Kumarakom lagoon and enjoy canoeing in the waters of Vembanad Lake during afternoon to discover the lives of the people that dwell along the meandering backwaters rivers, lagoons and lakes that make up the legendary backwaters of Kerala.
Day5: Sun kissed beach village Marari
After an early breakfast, you will commence cycling through the narrow country roads to Marari. Along the ride, you can watch as the villagers begin their day – school children on their way to schools, farmers tilling the fields, townships and coconut plantations. U can see coconut husk being processed and made into coir ropes and mats for livelihood by the villagers. You will interact with these villagers to see how this cottage industry works. You will also go to the nearby Fisherman Village and wind down the ride by spending the afternoon on the beach.
